In John 15:13, Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”. This weekend everyone will celebrate Memorial Day. It is a time to remember those that paid the ultimate price for their country. Recently, someone shared with me about their father lying about his age so he could enlist at age 17 and fight in World War Two. People are capable of caring more about others than themselves even at the cost of their own lives. Jesus left a perfectly safe life to lay down His life to redeem all who will accept the salvation He purchased.
As we celebrate Memorial Day, we should start by remembering the price Jesus paid for us. Next we should honor those who died for our nation and those willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice. Then we should ask ourselves how we are spending our lives. Do we recognize what it cost Jesus to redeem us? Have we forgotten the blood He shed and the lives they gave for our freedom? Are we honoring the sacrifice made for our freedom by living in a way that models the biblical definition of “greater love”?
